TOEFL is probably the most accessible test for certifying knowledge of English as a foreign language, the advantage of which is the extremely large number of sessions per year, which means that it is practically impossible to be late in taking it. Also, TOEFL gives us the results of the examination 10 working days after taking it (TOEFL iBT), compared to the month in which you will have to wait for a result from Cambridge English for example. Authorized support centers are very common and preparing for it should not become a problem, being possible in practically every second English language learning center in Moldova.
TOEFL is a test with an international recognition, being frequently taken and having many authorized support centers. TOEFL is recognized in over 130 countries worldwide. And, as mentioned above, the short evaluation period of the exam along with its affordability are the strengths that make people choose this test.
What does the TOEFL test give us?
First of all, the possibility to choose one of its three forms: TOEFL iBT® (Internet Based Testing), TOEFL CBT (Computer Based Testing) and TOEFL PBT (Paper Based Testing), the first form being considered the most popular and traditional. Thus, most candidates prefer specifically TOEFL iBT. However, each of the listed options is widely available in the test centers, differing only in the way candidates are examined and the time it takes to release the final results.
The TOEFL iBT test score is on a scale of 0 to 120 points.
• Each of the four sections receives a score calculated out of 30 points. Thus, the final score is the sum of all four tests .
• The minimum score to be admitted to a university abroad varies according to the express requirements of the university from 61 to 100, but in most cases a score above 80 is considered acceptable by most universities. Technical faculties usually ask for 10 points less than humanities.
However, the certificate of English language skills, obtained after passing a TOEFL test, is valid for only two years.
In the current year, the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Moldova adopted new rules for the 2015 BAC exams. Candidates can be exempted from the foreign language exam with a grade of “10” if they have passed exams with recognition during the years of pre-university education international for the certification of language skills and hold a certificate attesting a level of language competence equal to or higher than level B2 (C1 for candidates from bilingual classes), corresponding to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Thus, in order to obtain an official “10” on the BAC exam, students must obtain the following scores on the TOEFL test:
- Students of simple classes – B2 (86-109 points).
- Students of bilingual classes – C1 (110-120 points).
The structure of the test
The TOEFL test is given in the TOEFL IBT (Internet-Based) version several times a month throughout the year. It takes approximately four hours to take and assesses all core competencies. The test consists of four tests, which are as follows:
#1. The Reading section consists of reading three or four sources, each with 13-14 questions assigned. The number of texts may vary individually, taking into account the score accumulated in only three of them, chosen at random. The time allotted for the test varies between 1 hour and 1 hour and 20 minutes.
#2. The Listening section consists of listening to some recordings (conversations or academic presentations), with approximately 34 – 51 questions based on what you hear. The time allotted for this test varies between 1 hour and 1 hour and 30 minutes.
#3. The Speaking section consists of six questions that candidates must answer orally. The first two questions refer to the candidate, his opinion or personality, and the others involve summarizing or narrating some audio sequences previously listened to. 20 minutes are allotted for this test.
#4. The Writing section is composed of two subjects (essays) – the first essay involves a summary of the information given in two sources, one written and one recorded, both of which are informative. The second essay is of free-writing type, on a specific topic, given in the respective task. Often, the essay must follow certain parameters, such as those of an opinion essay (Opinion Essay), all of which are explained to the candidates in the preparation courses. 50 minutes are allocated for the fourth test.
How much does it cost and where can the exam be taken?
The first thing to do before taking the test is to register on this site , where you will have to indicate the country and the center where you want to take the test. All centers authorized to take the test are listed on the website, but their characteristics are not indicated. The diploma is delivered to the candidates at their home address. The test is paid online via American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard or VISA; or by electronic check if you have an account with the Bank of the United States or its subsidiaries. Taking this test costs $170. To pay for the TOEFL preparation, the candidates will have to take out of their pocket an amount between 2,500 and 3,100 lei.
